Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) is also known as cotton bollworm, gram pod borer, tomato fruit worm is a cosmopolitan pest and is distributed throughout Africa, Asia and Australia. Wide host range, high mobility and fecundity and ability to adapt and develop resistance against all common groups of insecticides used for its management, have enable it to become an important pest over a wide geographical range. An understanding genetic structure of these moths on a global scale could be of significance to agriculture where management of these moths is great concern. Examination of gene flow in H. armigera can establish the population movements and structure.
In my PhD project I am using different nuclear genes (microsatellites & ribosomal protein genes) and mitochondrial genes as molecular markers to examine genetic differentiation within the global field populations of H armigera. India will be a major focus of attention. The project will investigate the hypothesis that there is significant geographical variation and that population movements between host plants are significant factors in the temporal shift in the observed insecticide resistance profiles. This project also aim to studies the evolutionary relationship among four pest species of Helicoverpa (H. armigera, H. zea, H. punctigera and H. assulta)
