Drosophila melanogaster is the focus of a number of
high
throughput sequencing projects that aim to make it a powerful
platform
for within species comparative genomics. My project aims to use
this
wealth of genetic data and the equally rich set of
genetic
manipulation tools available for D. melanogaster
to understand
how this model organism resists toxins derived from the plants
and
fungi. I have been engaged in screening representative toxins from
7
different chemical families against 10 D. melanogaster
homozygosed lines resequenced by Marth et al (in
press).
The SNPs derived from the genomic data generated by Marth will be
used
to map resistance genes, and the dosage-mortality will inform
the
design of planned microarray experiments.
I'm interested in
understanding the induced responses to chemical
challenges that have been in
this insect's environment over
evolutionary time and examining the resistance
genes involved. It is
my hope that this research will be able to inform
studies into new,
rationally designed insecticides, as well as a further
understanding
of the chemical ecology of Drosophila in its
environment.
