Desiccation resistance in cosmopolitan and rainforest species of Drosophila.

I will be looking to uncover candidate genes for desiccation resistance in both cosmopolitan and restricted range species of Drosophila. The first stage of my project will be to conduct a QTL mapping experiment in Drosophila melanogaster. I will then attempt to find candidate genes for desiccation in non-model species using other techniques such as AFLP genome scanning. Ultimately I would like to compare the candidate gene sequences of both cosmopolitan and rainforest species to see if there is any evidence of gene decay or pseudogenisation in restricted range species.
