The increasing prevalence and spread of wheat streak mosaic virus in Australia, coupled with the discovery that this virus can be transmitted in different ways, has highlighted the necessity to fully understand the biology, ecology and genetics of the wheat curl mite, Aceria tosichella, largely responsible for vectoring the virus. As the threat in Australia of wheat streak mosaic virus causing levels of destruction as observed in the international wheat industry appears progressively more likely, CESAR are playing an active role in ascertaining crucial biological information on wheat curl mite that can be subsequently used for the implementation of appropriate management strategies aimed at controlling wheat curl mite and the associated spread of wheat streak mosaic virus.

Current Research:

Adam Miller joined the research group at CESAR in 2008 after completing his PhD in molecular systematics at Deakin University. Extending on CESAR’s recent discoveries of a wheat curl mite species complex and alternate host species within Australia, Adam is using fine scale molecular markers in order to clarify species lineages and investigate population dynamics (movement, gene flow and reproductive mode) of wheat curl mite in Australia.
